Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired the knowledge required to understand the basic principles of psychiatry; the clinical features of the two most common diagnostic groups of psychiatric disorders; the fundamentals of several other groups of psychiatric disorders; and, in particular, the key insights derived from psychiatric knowledge that are relevant to dental and prosthodontic care and to the patient–clinician relationship, from an interdisciplinary perspective.

In particular, students will be able to:

  • understand the concept of mental illness and its origins, the notion of psychiatric diagnosis, the current diagnostic classification system (DSM-IV-TR), the concepts of prevention and mental health promotion, the essential features of public mental health care, the fundamentals of psychopathology, the principles of good clinical practice in treatment and rehabilitation, and the essential aspects of the patient–clinician relationship within a multidisciplinary therapeutic team;

  • recognise the most commonly encountered psychiatric disorders, namely anxiety disorders and mood disorders;

  • recognise other potentially relevant groups of psychiatric disorders, including eating disorders, personality disorders, somatoform disorders, substance use disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders;

  • integrate knowledge of specific psychiatric symptoms and clinical presentations with good clinical practice in the care of and relationship with dental patients, within an integrated multidisciplinary framework;

  • have the basic skills required to manage interactions with unreasonable patients.”

Teaching methods

The classroom theory lessons are alternated with practical exercises

Assessment methods

The Commission consists of at least two components; the oral examination lasts for at least 20 minutes on the topics addressed in the lectures and in-depth reading of recommended texts

Objective of the exam will be to verify the student's ability to understand the peculiarities of the psychiatric diseases and psychopathological aspects.

On a very limited number of topics covered in the course → 18-19;

On a limited number of topics covered in the course and ability to autonomous analysis only on executive matters → 20-24;

On a large number of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis → 25-29;

Exhaustive preparation on the topics covered in the course, together with the aptitude to connect specific subjects with broader themes → 30-30L.
