Learning outcomes
Starting from the necessity to prepare an in-depth analysis of historical buildings, the course aims at understanding historical construction techniques and the main damage phenomena and their occurrence. Will be suggested expeditious and detailed approaches for the interpretation of the construction, to be understood as tools for assessing the state of conservation and residual capacity, also in relation to phenomena such as climate change and seismic events. Finally, the techniques of consolidation and improvement of historical structures will be illustrated.
Course contents
The course aims to provide, on the basis of a historical-critical approach, the essential theoretical and practical skills required for the direct analysis of the structural elements and systems of historic buildings (in particular, structural behaviour and phenomena of deterioration and instability), with an in-depth focus on the architectural heritage, with a view to developing a consolidation project.
In summary, some of the main activities are listed below:
- analysis of material sources, represented by the buildings themselves, and of all other documentary sources;
- interpretation and diagnosis of the main phenomena of deterioration and instability, from both a methodological and operational perspective;
- carrying out a preliminary and detailed survey of static instability phenomena;
- field trips and educational visits are planned.

Teaching methods
The course is divided into theoretical and practical lessons, during which the various topics will also be addressed through example cases, exercises and guided visits to construction sites, laboratories and museums where the previously introduced methodologies can be experienced live.
Assessment methods
The examination consists of a preliminary assessment of the knowledge acquired during the course, followed by a discussion of the work produced, which will cover:
a) A personal report on a historic building (agreed with the lecturer) focusing on historical analysis, construction techniques, structural assessment, state of conservation and forms of deterioration, accompanied by appropriate diagrams.
b) Written examination in the classroom. Assessment of learning will take place in the classroom via a written examination, structured as a series of questions designed to assess the skills acquired. The questions will focus on the characterisation and use of materials in historic buildings, the identification of structures, as well as diagnostic methodologies and the principles of architectural restoration. A significant part of the examination will also be devoted to an in-depth examination of the role of the engineer on restoration sites.
