Learning outcomes

Course contents

Course content

English language and culture. A brief revision of English grammar from B1 upwards (or slightly above). Students will be divided into proficiency groups based on the obligatory test taken after Christmas. The text used in class will depend on the level of each group.

The textbook for the first-year laboratory sessions will be announced by the lecturer before the start of the term.

Teaching methods

After attending the course, students will be required to sit a computer-based written language exam in one of Unibo’s computer labs.

The exam will consist of a B1-level language test comprising:

vocabulary exercises (naming objects, describing simple images, filling in gaps in a text, finding the right words to describe a room, a school, a house, a natural landscape, an outdoor scene, etc., all at B1 level, with approximately 20 per cent of items at B1+ level)
a reading exercise (a short text with True/False/Not Stated questions, word definitions, simple identification of synonyms, inserting titles or phrases, etc.)
a writing task
The exam lasts 60 minutes.

In the event of a fail, exams may be sat in consecutive exam sessions (i.e. there are no gaps between sessions or exam dates). Marks will be sent by email by the lecturers to each student, detailing the results for each part of the exam. Students are not required to accept the result of the ID; the result will be recorded by default.

To sit the exam, it is absolutely essential that the student is registered on Almaesami. It is not possible to sit any exam without formal registration. In the event of any problems with the registration process, students must contact the ACADEMIC OFFICE BEFORE THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE. Once the registration lists have closed, no students may be added.

Assessment methods

After attending the course, students will be required to sit a comprehensive language exam. If they fail, they may sit the exam in subsequent regular exam sessions.
The exam consists of a B1 language test comprising: vocabulary exercises (naming objects, describing simple images, filling in the gaps in a text, finding the right words to describe a room, a school, a house, a natural landscape, an outdoor scene, etc., all at B1 level with approximately 20% of B1+ elements); a reading exercise (a short text with True/False/Not Stated questions, word definitions, identification of simple synonyms, inserting titles or phrases, etc.). The exam lasts 60 minutes.

It is not possible to skip a session or an exam sitting.

Grades will be sent by email from the University to each student, and details will be provided for each part of the examination. Students are not required to accept the result of the ID; the result will be recorded by default.
