Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student has the ability to apply knowledge and understanding regarding the clinical-functional evaluation of subjects with pathology of the cardio-respiratory system. He knows the objectives and knows how to plan and implement a physiotherapy intervention, in subjects with respiratory-cardiological pathology and / or undergoing surgery / transplantation. The student knows and understands epidemiology, preventive aspects and the main operating techniques of burns. He knows and understands the role, the purpose of rehabilitation and knows how to plan, plan and implement an adequate rehabilitation intervention in the burn patient. The student knows and understands the theoretical principles and knows how to plan, program and apply a physiotherapy intervention in patients with pelvic floor dysfunctions or with urinary and faecal incontinence.

Course contents

RESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPY

- Introduction to Respiratory Physiotherapy

- Historical notes and objectives

- Outlines of Anatomy and Physiology of the Respiratory System

- Clinical and functional evaluation of the patient with respiratory problems: data collection, observation, subjective evaluation, objective evaluation (pulmonary function tests, reading and interpretation of the EGA)

- Principles underlying the setting of a respiratory physiotherapy treatment: posture, volume, flow.

- Bronchial unblocking techniques based on location in the lung

- CPAP, humidification, tracheostomy tube management, oxygen therapy, inhalation therapy: the role of the physiotherapist

- Exercise training: Evaluation and treatment setting

- Application of the techniques explored so far, in the main respiratory pathologies: COPD, bronchiectasis, asthma, cystic fibrosis, OSAS, neuromuscular diseases, interstitial diseases, cardio-thoracic surgery and lung transplantation, the patient in intensive care unit

- Discussion of clinical cases

Teaching methods

lLectures with PowerPoint presentations, practical exercises among students, discussion of clinical cases, role play

Assessment methods

The learning assessment will take place with an oral exam, during which the student will be presented with a clinical case involving a patient with a respiratory issue. The student will need to comment on it, identify goals, assessment tools, and treatment. There will also be questions about definitions and techniques covered during the lectures.

Additionally, there will be one question on pelvic floor rehabilitation and one on rehabilitation for burn patients.

The evaluation criteria will focus on mastery of the subject, accuracy of scientific terminology, and rigor in clinical reasoning.

Grading will be out of thirty.
