At the end of the course the students: - are familiar with a canon of cinema, based on a selection of representative works and auteurs; - know film history from its origins to the New Hollywood; - know key styles, trends and periods of film history; - understand the historical, economical, technological and social reasons that drove the development of cinema as an expressive form.
Course contents
Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
Readings/Bibliography
The list of texts to be studied for the exam will be available at the beginning of the course and will include both a mandatory section for all students and a specific section dedicated to non-attending students.
Teaching methods
Lectures featuring film excerpts and analysis of significant segments. Classes will be held in person (variations may apply due to unforeseen circumstances).
Assessment methods
The exam consists of an oral interview designed to assess knowledge of the topics covered in class and explored in greater depth in the texts listed in the syllabus (Bibliography and Filmography).
To pass the exam, students must demonstrate adequate knowledge and mastery of the topics discussed, as well as clarity of exposition and a solid command of language.
Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. It is necessary to contact the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en) with ample time in advance: the office will propose some adjustments, which must in any case be submitted 15 days in advance to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of these in relation to the teaching objectives.
According to the University of Bologna's guidelines, the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is based on the centrality of the individual and the maintenance of meaningful human control. GenAI is a support tool that must strengthen judgement, decision-making and responsibility, without ever replacing them. Its use requires transparency, awareness and accountability. More information are available at the following link:https://www.unibo.it/en/university/statute-standards-strategies-and-reports/artificial-intelligence/artificial-intelligence
Teaching tools
Film screenings. Students are required to watch the films listed in the exam filmography in their entirety and in their original language version. To this end, they have access to the Department of Arts Video Library (Via Barberia 4). There, they can book viewing stations or borrow materials for home viewing. To avoid a backlog of bookings, students are advised to start using the video library well in advance, rather than waiting until the final days before their chosen exam date. Should they choose not to use the Department’s video library service, they must still watch the films from the filmography in their original language version by obtaining them through other means (again, doing so well in advance is strongly recommended).
