20742 - Experimental and Technological Research Statistics

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Dental Hygiene (cod. 8481)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student knows the main methods and concepts of statistics applied to research in the field ob experimental and bio-medical sciences. Students can also:

- describe, interpret, and communicate information collected on a sample;

- evaluate the theoretical properties of measurements, their sensitivity and specificity;

- use the main probabilistic models to predict behaviors of biological variables, and to take decisions between more hypotheses.

Course contents

- Basic statistics elements: continuous and categorical variables
- Frequency measures
- Association measures, their meaning and interpretation
- Statistical inference; meaning and interpretation of confidence intervals
- Verification of hypotheses within studies
- Interpretation of the p-values; statistical power
- Meta-analyses
- Number needed to treat and Number needed to harm
- Standardization of rates
- Methods for the creation and management of databases
- Presentation of the results of a study
