Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will: understand the basics for independent and correct use of data; acquire the ability to apply statistical tests, taking into account the necessary and sufficient conditions for the results to have real clinical significance and not be affected by poor application, thus drawing erroneous conclusions; acquire the tools for a critical reading of medical literature; and be able to interact within the National Health Service (NHS) for epidemiological assessments or quality assurance.

Course contents

Statistics as a decision support tool, introduction to statistics, data sources, statistical variables, descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, variability and dispersion indices), inferential statistics and probability distributions, graphical representations, statistical tests for parametric and nonparametric analyses, survival analysis, open source computer tools for statistical analyses.
