Learning outcomes

Know the fundamental types of psychotherapeutic intervention. Know the application method and the effectiveness of psychotherapy. Know the psychological approach aimed at managing the chronic patient. Know the modern applications of neuroimaging to psychological disorders. Apply psychotherapy techniques to the routine clinical management of the patient. Apply psychotherapy techniques to the clinical management of the chronic patient. Judge when psychotherapy is “supportive”, advisable or recommended. Judge which psychotherapy approach is most suitable for the patient and his symptoms. Reflection and study on the elements characterizing psychotherapy are associated with the improvement of introspection, empathic relationship and communication skills. Learn how to manage complex cases and work in multidisciplinary teams (doctors, psychiatrists, psychotherapists).





Course contents

Definition of psychotherapy. Related practices: consultation, counseling, psychological support.

Definition of the different psychotherapeutic approaches: dynamic, cognitive behavioral, systemic, group.

Fields of application (neurotic, borderline, psychotic disorders)

Evaluation of the effectiveness of psychotherapy

Psychological management of the chronic patient

Psychological rehabilitation of the chronic patient

Examples of application: the gastroenterological patient (chronic inflammatory bowel diseases)

Examples of application: the patient with diabetes, obesity, dysmetabolic syndromes.

Fields of application of neuroimaging to clinical psychology.

The following will be provided in class: teaching material also available via username and password at Virtuale Università di Bologna, references to recommended texts.

Teaching methods

The teaching consists of frontal lessons for a total of 24 hours. The contents of the program will be presented with examples of clinical cases.

Assessment methods

Learning will be assessed through the presentation and discussion of a clinical case. The test involves group work. Eligibility is achieved if the work highlights a correct clinical and diagnostic framework of the case presented.

Teaching tools

Slides, videos, presentations of clinical cases, interactions with students will be used.
