Course contents
French music theatre and its querelles: the philosophy of music of J.-J. Rousseau
The course aims to introduce students to French music theatre of the 17th and 18th century, explaining the reasons for the birth of a peculiar tradition, different from the one of Italian opera. It also aims to introduce students to the fascinating aesthetic debate on French music, with an especial focus on the music philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Though many centuries separate us from Rousseau’s writings, the reading of essays such as the Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts, or The Origin of Languages will not leave one emotionless: moments of clairvoyance, inconceivable provocations, lyrism mixed with rationality, all these elements will captivate readers of any time. Besides the beauty of Rousseau’s pages, his thought is a real cornerstone to understanding 18th century musical aesthetics and its connection with historical and political thoughts of the time
