Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory the student: is able to use some of the concepts he/she came in contact with, by applying them to specific contexts and experiences; by select reading he/she has some knowledge of the discipline-specific vocabulary and is able to use it in his/her written assignment.

Course contents

The workshop aims to provide students with concrete tools to learn how to listen to, analyze, critique, and describe contemporary musical works using appropriate terminology.

Part of the workshop will focus on a selection of musical works and/or related readings. Each week, students will be asked to discuss in class selected musical pieces and/or previously assigned readings.

Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. It is suggested that they get in touch as soon as possible with the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en) and with the lecturer in order to seek together the most effective strategies for following the lessons and/or preparing for the examination.

The readings and listening assignments will be given progressively, during the course of the workshop itself.

Assessment methods

Final Paper for the Workshop. The topic must be agreed upon with the instructor and may focus either on one of the case studies discussed in class, or on a musical piece and/or a specific aspect of 20th-century musical aesthetics.
The paper must be sent to the instructor via email two days before the selected exam date for the 12-credit exam (Institutions plus Laboratorio.

Students who have actively participated in the group exercises in class will be exempt from writing the paper.
