96404 - Phenomenology of Contemporary Art. Lab (1) (M-Z)

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Drama, Art and Music Studies (cod. 6637)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory the student: knows how to analyze and deal with different applications of the languages of contemporary art, in its specific field and interdisciplinary relations; knows how to recognize the role played by visual studies in the overall development of artistic research and their contribution to the processes of the cultural industry.

Course contents

The lab explores the effects of the visual arts in other related fields, from music to dance, from film to fashion. Artistic research aimed at breaking down the separations between the arts will therefore be addressed, also in order to understand the transformations implemented in the media employed. Particular attention will therefore be given to the processes of hybridisation and contamination between languages. The path of analysis starts with the avant-gardes of the early 20th century and arrives at the most recent results, with numerous examples aimed at illustrating the variety of solutions adopted.

Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. It is suggested that they get in touch as soon as possible with the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en) and with the lecturer in order to seek together the most effective strategies for following the lessons and/or preparing for the examination.

Teaching methods

Lectures with multimedia support: slides, pictures, audiovisual materials

Assessment methods

The student will have to produce a visual essay from the ideas received during the workshop. They are therefore required to prepare a PowerPoint presentation of 4 slides in total illustrating the poetics of an artist through 3 works. The artist does NOT have to be one of those covered by the lecturer in class, but may be an exponent of the trends or areas of research addressed.

The first slide must show the name and surname of the artist, chronological details and geographical context of origin. The other three slides must show the works (one per slide) with a caption as follows: author's name, title of the work (in italics), year in which it was created, technique, materials, measurements and possible location (the museum or collection in which it is located). The works may also be accompanied by quotations from the artist that help to illustrate his poetics more clearly. In the latter case, the source from which the quotation was taken should be indicated.

The images selected by the student can be taken from various sources as long as they are sharp and in good resolution.

The file, named SURNAME_NAME, must be uploaded in time to be assessed during the examination via the link provided by the lecturer during the lessons.

Clarity, relevance, completeness of the information and coherence of the presentation will be an element of assessment for an increase of the grade achieved in the institutional part of the course from 0 to 3 points or the possible award of honours.

The assessment methods are valid for both attending and non-attending students.

Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities. It is necessary to contact the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en) with ample time in advance: the office will propose some adjustments, which must in any case be submitted 15 days in advance to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of these in relation to the teaching objectives.
