Learning outcomes
This course unit aims at providing the students with the linguistic skills suitable for the understanding and the production of short written and oral Italian texts. It also intends to develop the interpersonal relationships in the horizon of the Italian-speaking culture. In particular, this course unit will focus on selected aspects of the Italian language, namely those that may be more useful for facilitating communication and interactions.
Course contents
1. Social interaction and daily life (greeting and introducing oneself / talking about one's daily routine / describing personal habits / asking for and giving personal and family information).
2. Expressing opinions, preferences and moods (expressing tastes and preferences / expressing agreement and disagreement in a simple way / expressing basic feelings and emotions).
3. Asking for, giving and exchanging information (asking for and giving information about places, times, services and activities / asking for and giving directions / describing places, objects and people).
4. Handling practical situations (shopping / ordering at a bar or restaurant / asking for and giving information about prices, quantities and sizes / making a reservation / expressing immediate needs)
5. Proposing, inviting and responding (making invitations and proposals / accepting and declining an invitation / responding to proposals and suggestions).
6. Talking about present and past experiences (talking about personal events and experiences / placing events in time / describing actions completed in the past).
7. Talking about the present and future (describing situations and actions in progress / talking about future plans, projects and intentions / making appointments and agreeing on dates and times).
8. Functional written communication (writing short messages and informal communications / writing short emails / filling in a form with personal details / writing short descriptive and narrative texts).
9. Communication strategies (ask to repeat and speak more slowly / ask for clarification / compensate for language gaps with basic communication strategies).

Teaching methods
The course adopts a communicative and functional approach, with:
- interactive lectures;
- pair and group activities;
- role-play and simulations;
- listening, reading, writing and speaking exercises;
- use of authentic materials (videos, articles, dialogues).
Assessment methods
The final assessment test includes:
- listening comprehension,
- reading comprehension,
- written interaction,
- written production,
- guided oral production and interaction.
The assessment will take into consideration:
- grammatical correctness;
- breadth and appropriateness of vocabulary;
- communicative effectiveness;
- oral and written comprehension;
- active participation in lessons.

In order to achieve the learning objectives, the course uses the following teaching tools and aids:
1. Teaching materials
- A2 level Italian L2 textbook adopted as a reference text,
- Supplementary materials selected and/or produced by the teacher (grammar sheets, exercises, communication activities),
- Simplified authentic materials (dialogues, announcements, emails, short informative texts),
- Multimedia resources (audio and video) for the development of listening comprehension.
2. Technological tools
- The University's e-learning platform for sharing materials, notices and activities,
- Online tools for interactive exercises and self-assessment,
- Use of digital resources for listening and pronunciation.
