Learning outcomes
The course aims at introducing contemporary theoretical debates in Translation Studies, and at providing the students with the methodologies and the tools necessary to translate different text-types. Students are expected to be aware of how translation is not only a linguistic operation, but also a cultural one. Lectures will provide an overview of scholarly research on translation, with particular attention to contemporary cultural-linguistic perspectives especially those of Spanish-speaker scholars. The students are expected to become expert in the translation, from Spanish into Italian and from Italian into Spanish, of different text-types: specialized (e.g., in the social sciences); semi-specialized (e.g., popular science and business in press magazines; tourist guides), and literary, and become aware of the problems encountered and the strategies employed. They are made familiar with the inextricable text-context connection, the professional task of the translator, his/her identity, visibility and ethics, the role of the commissioner, the purpose/function of a translation, the main types of translation and of translation strategies. They are also made aware of methodologies to solve problems arising, e.g., from cultural differences, linguistic varieties and language for specific purposes. Language classes aim at improving students linguistic competence; over the two year period students knowledge of Spanish should reach an equivalent level to C2 in accordance with the European framework in all four abilities. These classes will work in connection with the lectures to improve students writing skills in particular.

The main objectives of the course are:

To provide students with a solid theoretical and methodological framework on the history, main currents, and contemporary approaches in translation studies, with special emphasis on translation within the Hispanic context and the impact of computer-assisted and automatic translation technologies.

To promote the development of advanced practical skills in translating texts from Italian to Spanish and vice versa, encouraging critical and conscious reflection on translation processes, the role of the translator, and the stylistic and functional particularities of various textual genres, with special attention to audiovisual translation.

To foster students’ familiarization with the different diatopic varieties of Spanish through the selection of representative texts, in line with the C2 level of linguistic competence required in the Language, Society and Communication master’s program.

Teaching methods
Classes will be conducted using a communicative, dynamic, and interactive approach. Active participation of attending students will be encouraged, both in individual contributions and in group activities proposed throughout the course. The course will be taught entirely in Spanish and will combine lectures with practical activities aimed at fostering student engagement.
Sessions will make extensive use of audiovisual materials and selected texts, with the aim of strengthening language skills and linking theoretical reflection with practical application.
Assessment methods
The assessment for the lectures (Brandani) will be based on a written exam, consisting of two parts: a theoretical section with questions to verify the understanding of key concepts, and a practical translation task (from Spanish into Italian) involving one of the text types studied during the course.
Note: In order to be admitted to the lecture exam, students must first pass the exam for the practical language exercises, which accounts for one-third (1/3) of the final grade (see the dedicated page for more details on the language practice course).
There are no differences in the syllabus or exam format between attending and non-attending students.
