B1865 - Spanish Language and Laboratory I

Learning outcomes

The student, at the end of the course, must demonstrate the ability to understand concepts and topics related to social sciences, political sciences, in general, and international politics and his news expressed in Spanish and must also be able to express himself on the same topics in Spanish at a level not less than A2 and, ideally, B1 (according to the Council of Europe Reference Framework). As far as the written language is concerned, the student must be able to read and understand complex texts (in particular reviews and manuals) with a level of difficulty no lower than B1 and, ideally, B2.

Course contents

The Spanish Language and Laboratory I program includes a 40-hour Level A1 Laboratory (preparatory) to be held during the first semester and, during the second semester, a 20-hour course and a 40-hour Level A2 Laboratory. During the course and laboratories, the non-linguistic topics covered will mainly concern the socio-political sphere of Spanish-speaking countries.

SYLLABUS

The Spanish Language Course I syllabus approaches one or two topics for each of the following three areas:

1. Problemas de ayer (cuestiones históricas y sociopolíticas de los países de lengua española).
1.a. La muerte de Franco, la crisis del régimen y la secuencia de gobiernos en la España democrática.
1.b. Golpes de Estado y dictaduras sudamericanas de los años1.c 1.cLa constitución española del 78 y la transición democrática.

3. Lengua en acción.

Non-attending students are required to study all units of modules A and B of San Vicente and Lombardini (2010) (see bibliography). For each unit, students are required to study the suggested texts, the associated glossary entries, and the comprehension and vocabulary exercises.

Teaching methods

The course consists of a 20-hour lecture, held in the second semester, and two laboratory modules of 40 hours each:

the preparatory laboratory, level A1, held in the first semester;

the second semester laboratory, level A2, held in parallel with the lecture.

The workshops are aimed at acquiring the fundamental structures of the Spanish language through theoretical and practical activities and guided exercises, with the aim of leading students to achieve a level of communication corresponding to level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Working students

Working students are required to contact the instructor by email to arrange an interview. During the interview, a personalized plan will be defined for passing the Spanish Language and Laboratory 1 exam.

Students with SLDs or disabilities

Students with SLDs or temporary or permanent disabilities are invited to contact the relevant University Office (Office for Students with Disabilities and SLDs [https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it]) well in advance, which will assess and propose any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures.

These measures must be communicated to the instructor at least 15 days before the exam and will be evaluated in relation to their consistency with the educational objectives of the course.

Assessment methods

Attending students

To be considered a regular student, 65% attendance in classes is required to guarantee the minimum content covered during the course.

The final grade for the subject is an average of the Course/Laboratory + a grade (from 0 to 3) for the oral exam.

The Course/Laboratory average is composed as follows: the grade for the first midterm exam, the grade for the second midterm exam, and the grade for the continuous assessment of the course/laboratory. Continuous assessment is qualitative and quantitative.

Only one of the two midterms may be retaken (the one that was missed or did not achieve the minimum grade, or one chosen by the student who wants to raise their average). Retakes will be held ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY during the FIRST CALL (PRIMO APPELLO). Anyone who does not show up or does not pass will be considered a non-attending student.

The oral exam will be a conversation on socio-political topics and vocabulary (debate). To take the oral exam, students must register through ALMAESAMI. Regular students will have the opportunity to take the oral exam, maintaining the average obtained in the course/laboratory until the September exam session.

To access the oral exam, attending students must register via ALMAESAMI.

Attending students will have the option of replacing the oral exam with a presentation on a historical-political topic. General guidelines for this replacement will be provided during class.

Please note that each student may take the exam ONLY once per exam session (this applies only to students enrolled in the three-year program).

Non-attending students

Depending on the health situation at the time, the exam for non-attending students will be held in person or remotely, according to the following schedule:

1. Students must arrive (on the specified day at the specified time) in a virtual/real classroom (to be indicated in due course) for personal identification. There, general instructions for taking the exam will be provided. For remote exams, the device used for communication must be equipped with a working microphone and camera.

2. Students will then move to a Moodle environment (EOL) to complete the first three parts of the test:

– Part 1 or Linguistic Part. There are 30 items (multiple choice or short answer) at B1 level with a maximum value of 30 points (a minimum of 18 points is required to proceed to Part 2). This part will have a maximum time limit of 25 minutes.
– Part 2 or Historical-Political Part: There are 15 items (multiple choice or short answer) taken from Debate (complete modules C and D) with a maximum value of 15 points (to move on to Part 3, a minimum of 9 points must be achieved). The part will have a maximum time of 13 minutes.
– Part 3 or Written Production Part: There is a newspaper article to read from which students must extract the main ideas, transform sentences from direct to indirect style, express opinions, value judgments, and make proposals. The exercises as a whole are worth a maximum of 15 points. This part will have a maximum time limit of 35 minutes.

3. Once the first three parts are completed, the student will return to the virtual/real classroom for the oral exam.

– Part 4 or Oral exam: If you pass the written exams with at least 36/60 (i.e., 18/30), you will take an oral exam on the platform or in person on all units of Modules C and D of Debate.

To access the exam as a non-attending student, students must register via ALMAESAMI.
