96759 - Representation Theory

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Mathematics (cod. 6730)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Mathematics (cod. 5827)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the fundamental notions of finite-dimensional Lie algebras and their representation theory. The student is able to handle the main tools of this theory that can be used to construct mathematical models.

Course contents

All the standard topics in every introductory course to Lie algebras: classification of complex semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0; description of finite-dimensional irreducible representations in the same setting.

Readings/Bibliography

Humphreys "Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory", Springer

Kac's MIT notes on Lie algebras

McGerty's online notes on Lie algebras

Teaching methods

Chalk and blackboard.

Problem sets will be (irregularly) circulated.
