Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Business Administration (cod. 6798)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the class, students will acquire knowledge and skills in performance measurement and evaluation systems to support corporate decision-making and control processes, with particular reference to sustainable business models. Practical laboratory activities, such as project work, workshops, case studies, cooperative learning, and classroom presentations, will help students understand the challenges of corporate sustainability and design management control systems capable of combining competitiveness, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and lasting economic prosperity.

Course contents

The class aims to address the following topics:

- Sustainability mindset

- Sustainable business models

- Multidimensional performance management systems (environmental, social, economic) to support internal decision-making processes

- Sustainability reporting to support disclosure to external stakeholders

Readings/Bibliography

The lab intends to utilize various resources, both written and audio/video. These include scientific articles, reports, and book chapters, as well as podcasts and video interviews, all of which are made available open-access on the Virtual Platform.

Teaching methods

By its very nature, the lab intends to utilize operational tools that underpin learning by doing, including design thinking.

Specifically, for each of the topics covered, lectures will alternate with company testimonials. All topics will then converge into a business case, representing a real-world challenge, to be addressed in teams.

Assessment methods

Grading varies depending on attendance.

For those who ensure an attendance rate of at least 80% of classes, the assessment consists of two parts:

  • A group assignment (65% of the final grade)
  • An individual assignment (35% of the final grade).

The group assignment aims to develop a sustainable business case based on a real-world business challenge. This will require the formation of teams of approximately 8 students (in any case, no fewer than 6 and no more than 10). The teams must identify a contact person who will be responsible for managing organizational aspects and liaising with the instructor.

The individual assignment consists of a paper in which each student develops a reflection on what they have learned in the course, following a guideline that will be provided at the end of the course and adopting the principles of the Sustainability Mindset that will be presented at the beginning of the course.

For those who cannot guarantee the minimum attendance rate, the assessment will be an individual work (containing both theoretical and reflective parts) which constitutes 100% of the final mark.
