Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will know the basics of Tableau. During the course they will learn how to import data, create datasets and interactive visualizations with Tableau.

Course contents

  • Introduction to Tableau: overview of Tableau tools (Desktop, Server, Public, and Prep); overview of the Tableau Desktop interface and its features; importing and connecting data from various sources; dimensions and measures; introduction to the data model (relationships).
    Exercise: Tableau download, data import.
  • Creating Basic Visualizations: types of bar charts and scatter plots; using colors, shapes, and labels to enhance visualizations; introduction to creating geographic maps.
    Exercise: basic visualizations.
  • Calculated Fields and Other Analysis Tools: creating custom calculations and calculated fields (LOD); hierarchies; sets; using filters and actions to create interactivity.
  • Dashboard Creation: fundamental concepts of data visualization and visual analytics; designing and creating dashboards to present multiple visualizations; adding global filters and interactivity between visualizations; optimizing the look and layout of dashboards.
  • Dashboard Optimization, Sharing, and Distribution of Analyses: exporting visualizations and dashboards in different formats; publishing interactive dashboards on Tableau Server or Tableau Online.

Teaching methods

Assessment methods

Submission of a group project developed in Tableau by the exam date.
