Learning outcomes

This course aims to provide the tools to study Information Systems and Technologies used in arts organizations and in cultural heritage processing. Students will be expected to deal consciously and appropriately with the development of information technologies. In particular, they will need to pay attention to the use of data in decision-making processes inherent in the cultural sector and how information technologies can enhance cultural participation and consumption. In particular, the student is expected to learn about the following topics: - Networks, Web & Mobile Technologies - Data processing and data collection - Digital Transformation - Digital Tools for Arts Organization

Course contents

The course introduces the main concepts and applications of Information Systems and Technologies (IS/IT) in the cultural sector. Students will acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to critically evaluate and use digital tools in arts organizations and cultural heritage management.

Contents include:

  • Information technologies and networks: foundations of computers, networks, and the Internet; introduction to mobile and web technologies; the role of social media in cultural participation and communication.

  • Working with data (part I): understanding the difference between data and information; introduction to spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets); basic operations, formulas, and visualization.

  • Working with data (part II): database fundamentals (tables, queries, relations); applications in cultural institutions such as archives, collections management, CRM systems.

  • Privacy, ethics, and data: data responsibility in the digital society; privacy and GDPR; critical discussion of the Cambridge Analytica case and implications for the cultural sector.

  • Case study – Robot Festival: analysis of a cultural event’s digital strategy, focusing on the use of IT for organization, communication, and audience engagement.

  • Digital transformation and tools for arts organizations: from digitization to digital transformation; digital tools for cultural management, including project management platforms, ticketing, and fundraising solutions. 

Readings/Bibliography

No compulsory textbook is required. A selection of online reference materials (web resources) and the lecture presentations will be provided during the course.

Teaching methods

The course combines theoretical lectures with the analysis and discussion of case studies, as well as contributions from guest speakers who will share experiences and best practices from the professional field. In addition, students will work on a group project designed to encourage the practical application of the concepts covered in class.

Assessment methods

Student assessment will be primarily based on the development and presentation of a group project work, aimed at evaluating the ability to critically and creatively apply the concepts and methodologies introduced in class.
