B5612 - ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVES FOR MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT OPERATIONS

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Civil Engineering (cod. 8895)

Learning outcomes

Transportation nodes and networks underpin procurement, manufacture/processing and distribution chains for passengers and goods on a global scale. The "Environmental Perspectives in Transportation Systems"

Course contents

Main topics:

  • The concept of transportation system: supply, demand, activity subsystems and their mutual interactions.
  • Demand and supply modeling for freight transport: quantitative methods for freight demand estimation, O/D freight matrices, input/output regional models. The supply subsystem in freight transport systems: physical, operational, and organizational components.
  • Definition and properties of multimodal freight transportation: structure, advantages and constraints, relationship between infrastructure, operations and logistics organization.
  • Intermodal freight transport: components, vehicles and load units, transfer operations at modal interfaces, coordination mechanisms between maritime, rail, road and inland waterway transport. Design of intermodal infrastructures and inland terminals: planning criteria, terminal layout and equipment selection, accessibility and connectivity evaluation, and integration within logistics corridors.
  • Maritime ports and container terminals: structural and functional characteristics, organization of port subsystems, vessel and cargo handling processes, capacity and performance analysis.
  • Environmental aspects in freight transport operations: regulatory frameworks and international standards, analysis of energy consumption and pollutant emissions for transportation systems modes, evaluation of mitigation strategies, technological enablers for environmental efficiency, case studied on green logistics and decarbonization initiatives.
