Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will acquire the knowledge and ability to understand the history of obstetrics, gynecology, and the concept of sexuality.

Course contents

The course will focus on the following topics:

Birth, the body, and motherhood in the ancient world;
The figure of the midwife: evolution from the Middle Ages to the modern era;
The rise of medical gynecology between the 18th and 19th centuries;
The medicalization of childbirth and the technicization of delivery;
The female body and sexuality;
The sexual revolution and the right to contraception;
Reproductive technologies;
Bioethics of pregnancy and childbirth.

Readings/Bibliography

PDFs of the PowerPoint presentations used during the lectures will be the material of the oral exam, together with selected scientific articles presented in class.
All materials will be made available after each lecture.
The following reading is also recommended:

Teaching methods

Lectures and Structured discussions on selected themes.

Interdisciplinary seminars will be organized.

Assessment methods

Assessment will be conducted through a final oral examination.

The oral exam will cover the topics addressed during the lectures and the materials listed in the “Readings/Bibliography” section.

The exam dates within each exam session will be available on the instructor’s personal webpage under the “Exam Dates” section.

Assessment will take into account the student’s knowledge of the topics, clarity of exposition, and ability to connect the various themes.

Students who, due to disabilities, specific learning disorders (SLD), or temporary or permanent conditions, require compensatory or alternative tools are invited to inform the instructor of their needs so that the most appropriate arrangements can be agreed upon.

It is also strongly recommended to contact in advance the relevant University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en ). This office will propose any necessary accommodations to interested students. These accommodations must be submitted to the instructor at least 15 days in advance for approval, and will be evaluated in light of the educational objectives of the course.

Teaching tools

The slides and scientific articles used during the lectures will be made available through institutional tools such as the Virtuale platform, along with other materials considered useful and used during the course.
