Learning outcomes
By the end of the lessons, the student will have acquired essential knowledge that highlights best nursing practices in clinical and organizational processes. The student will also be familiar with the methodology for accessing Evidence-Based information to apply in professional practice.
Course contents
- Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and Evidence Based Nursing (EBN): Principles, methods, tools, and phases of the process
- Formulating the research question: The PICO model
- Search strategies in the main databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, JBI, Scopus, Web of Science, TRIP database, UpToDate, ILISI
- The pyramid of evidence and research designs
- Secondary sources: Systematic reviews and meta-analysis
- Guidelines
- Evaluation of the quality of evidence through the critical analysis of research articles
- Transfer and integration of scientific evidence into clinical practice

During the lessons, additional teaching material will be provided by the teachers and made available on the course website.
Teaching methods
The course is divided into lectures and practical exercises in the classroom, individually and in small groups. These exercises aim to transform a clinical care problem into one or more questions to be searched in the scientific literature by querying the main nursing databases.
Assessment methods
Assessment Methods: The course assessment consists of:
-
A compulsory oral examination, with a maximum score of 25 points.
-
An optional midterm written assignment, offering the possibility of earning up to 5 bonus points.
The midterm written assignment is intended to assess the intermediate acquisition of competencies and, if completed, allows students to increase their oral examination score up to a maximum overall grade of 30/30.
Students who do not complete the written assignment may obtain the maximum grade of 30/30 through a more comprehensive oral examination, which will also include the assessment of bibliographic research skills.
Oral Exam. The purpose of the oral exam is to verify the student's ability to apply their knowledge and make the necessary logical-deductive connections.
The grading criteria are as follows:
- 25 → Substantially exhaustive preparation on the topics covered in the course, an ability to make independent choices in critical analysis and connections, full mastery of specific terminology, and the capacity to argue and self-reflect.
- 22-24 → Preparation on a wide range of topics covered in the course, including independent choices in critical analysis and mastery of specific terminology.
- 19-21 → Preparation on a limited number of topics covered in the course, with the ability to analyze specific issues independently and express them in correct language.
- 18 → Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course, with the ability to analyze only with assistance from the teacher, expressed in generally correct language.
- < 18 → Insufficient preparation on the main course topics, with incorrect language usage.
Midterm written test. Students, organized into groups of five, will be required to prepare an optional written assignment following the format provided by the teachers.
The assignment includes:
- the formulation of a research question on a topic of choice using the PICO model;
- conducting a literature search on PubMed;
- selecting three relevant scientific articles;
- analyzing the key contents of the selected articles and presenting a summary in tabular form.
The assignment must be uploaded to the Virtual platform at least one week prior to the exam date.
Assessment criteria for the written assignment (max 5 points)
- 5 points → Correct and comprehensive formulation of the research question using the PICO model; structured and coherent bibliographic search on PubMed; appropriate selection of three relevant scientific articles; in-depth critical analysis of the key contents with a clear, complete, and well-organized tabular summary.
- 4 points → Well-formulated PICO question; adequate bibliographic search; relevant article selection; correct analysis with an orderly and substantially complete tabular summary.
- 3 points → Sufficiently coherent but not fully structured research question; essential bibliographic search; generally relevant articles; mainly descriptive analysis with an adequate but not in-depth tabular summary.
- 2 points → Partially focused or incompletely structured research question; limited bibliographic search; article selection not fully consistent with the question; superficial analysis and incomplete tabular summary.
- 1 point → Imprecisely formulated research question; unstructured bibliographic search; poorly relevant articles; very limited analysis and inadequate tabular summary.
- 0 points → Failure to comply with the required format or submission of a seriously inadequate assignment.
The test will follow the guidelines outlined in the University regulations (which you are encouraged to consult) and any additional instructions provided by the academic bodies from time to time. Students may present at the exam a concept map that summarizes and connects all the topics covered.
Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
Teaching tools
The lessons will be carried out through the use of the main technological tools (PowerPoint) together with the connection to databases via Proxi Unibo.
