Learning outcomes

The student acquires the different types of research studies, measurements and tools of social research. The student is able to apply the concepts in the construction of the thesis as a research tool, in the publication of an article or a poster. Primary studies: sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, predictive values of diagnostic tools. Secondary studies: Characteristics of secondary studies. Systematic reviews and guidelines.

Teaching methods

Lectures and moments of practical application of the contents, in the classroom, with individual or group exercises.

Assessment methods

Type of exam:
Individual oral interview (approx. 10 minutes per student).

Exam format and content:
To take the exam, the student must:

  • study the course materials provided by the instructor;

  • prepare an oral presentation on a topic of their choice from among those covered during the lectures;

  • answer two questions drawn at random from a pool of questions prepared by the instructor.

Assessment criteria and grading breakdown:
The final grade is expressed in thirtieths (with possible honors) and is distributed as follows:

  • Presentation of the chosen topic: up to 25 points, based on clarity, content mastery, appropriate use of terminology, and ability to make connections with other course topics;

  • Two instructor’s questions: up to 5 points in total (2.5 points each), awarded only in case of accurate and relevant answers. The questions are randomly drawn from a set made available to students in advance;

  • Honors (cum laude): awarded for particularly in-depth preparation on the chosen topic and fully correct, well-articulated, and reasoned responses to both questions.
