96422 - The Use of Fragrances in Perfumery

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has a good knowledge of the main fragrances used to "build" a perfume. Many practical examples will be presented to show a first approach to the art of perfumery, in collaboration with companies in the sector.

Course contents

This elective course will be divided in two parts:

1. A presentation of the synthetic molecules (called captives) developed by the companies that produce fragrances. A captive odorant, or captive, is an odorant molecule patented by the originating manufacturer for exclusive use in their own perfumes to protect them from imitation.
2. The study and the production of some parfums starting from single ingredients. The following topics will be covered: study of olfactory language, and of raw materials, formulation theory and then laboratory applications.

Teaching methods

Videoprojection of power point presentations and practical activity for the formulation of parfums.

Assessment methods

• Oral exam: the student will prepare and discuss a presentation of a fragrance of his/her choice, containing all aspects related to the production and use of this fragrance, with particular attention to its chemical properties

The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
