Learning outcomes

Acquires knowledge and the ability to understand the fundamentals of the electromyography (EMG) diagnostic technique

Course contents

The teaching program is focused on EMG techniques in relation to their main applications in diseases of the peripheral nervous system, such as motor neuron diseases, radiculopathies, neuromuscular junction disorders, polyneuropathies, and myopathies. Both the technical aspects and the main challenges of applying this method in clinical practice will be analyzed.

These lessons will serve as a preparatory foundation for a series of lectures in the following year, dedicated to the evaluation of EMG in the main disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

The teaching materials will be provided by the instructor at the end of the lessons.

Teaching methods

The course is structured with in-person lectures in the classroom.

Discussions among students will be encouraged through in-class questions on the topic covered during each lecture.

Assessment methods

Attendance at teaching activities is mandatory. The minimum attendance requirement to be admitted to the final exam is 75% of the lessons. For integrated courses (IC), the 75% attendance requirement refers to the total number of lessons for the IC. Students who do not meet the minimum attendance requirement will not be admitted to the final exam for the course and will need to attend the lessons again in the following academic year.

Any topic covered in class may be subject to examination.

The examination method consists of an oral exam. The date of the oral exam will be agreed upon with the students during the first lesson.

The exam will be passed if the result is at least sufficient, which means 18 out of 30. The maximum grade will be 30 cum laude, achieved by adequately answering the questions and demonstrating good presentation and re-elaboration skills regarding the topics covered.
