Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will acquire the main clinical characteristics of the most common conditions amenable to surgical treatment, recognizing them in individual patients. They will be able to correlate specific symptoms with these conditions in the context of hospitalized patients, and will understand the fundamentals of the diagnostic process. They will also be familiar with the terminology of the main surgical procedures and basic technical knowledge in order to understand the repercussions, especially functional, that the procedure can have. Finally, they will have a basic understanding of the sequelae of the most common surgical procedures, as well as the fundamentals of follow-up measures, especially in the field of neoplastic pathology.
Course contents
- Benign and malignant diseases of the breast
- Benign upper alimentary tract diseases: gastroesophageal reflux disease and achalasia
- Malignant upper alimentary tract diseases: neoplasms of the esophagus, gastroesophageal junction, and stomach
- Benign hepatobiliary-pancreatic diseases: diseases associated with gallstones, cholecystitis, biliary tract diseases, acute and chronic pancreatitis, requiring surgical treatment
- Malignant hepatobiliary-pancreatic diseases: neoplasms of the liver, bile ducts, and pancreas
- Benign colorectal surgical diseases: intestinal malrotation, diverticular disease, proctological diseases, inflammatory bowel disease.
- Colorectal neoplastic diseases
- Benign and malignant adrenal and splenic disorders
- Abdominal surgical emergencies and urgencies
- Hernias and incisional hernias

Oral Exam
The oral exam will be graded as follows:
Insufficient: Lack of basic preparation, Serious and repeated conceptual errors.
18-19: Knowledge of basic concepts without essential gaps in knowledge. Exposition of concepts and use of medical language generally acceptable.
20-24: Knowledge of basic concepts without essential gaps in knowledge. Fair and effective exposition of concepts and use of valid medical language.
25-29: Good, very good, or even excellent preparation, but with some uncertainties in the presentation that compromise full marks. Ability to analyze and correlate information independently. Exposition of concepts in the correct sequence and complete ability to use medical language.
30-30L: Complete, consolidated preparation, without uncertainties or errors on the topics covered during the course. Ability to focus the presentation on the topic without providing unsolicited information. Ability to argue responses and combine the information obtained effectively and independently. Thorough use of medical language.
