Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is familiar with the main practices and trends in contemporary art, both in terms of technical-material and theoretical aspects; he/she is able to assess the role assumed by 20th century visual arts; he/she is able to understand the contribution made by contemporary art to the development of visual culture with particular attention to technological, media and social relations issues.
Course contents
This course addresses twentieth-century artistic practices aimed at overcoming traditional representation and artistic techniques. Beginning with the experimentation with new media and materials within the historical avant-gardes (Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, Dada etc.), the many ways in which everyday objects, the body, the environment and technologies have been used or reinvented by the most important artists of the second half of the twentieth century up to the latest trends will be illustrated. Special attention will be paid to artistic practices that redefine the work as a physical and mental experience, soliciting direct participation of the viewer. The course also intends to suggest a broader approach to the teaching of contemporary art history, going beyond the limits imposed by more traditional school manuals. An attempt will therefore be made to reason about the multiple methodological possibilities inherent in the discipline.
