Learning outcomes

The course aims to illustrate the content of the archival discipline in its various profiles: historical, legal, scientific and managerial. The student will acquire knowledge of the theoretical and practical tools principles regarding the preparation, holding, description and use of the archives, both traditional and digital. The course will provide in this regard computer skills related to activities and archival research.

Course contents

After recalling some essential elements of the history of archives and archival discipline, the course will address the general archival issues: the concept of the archive and the life cycle stages, emphasizing the crucial aspects of the transition to digital process. The illustration special archival provides an overview of the main types of archives, with particular attention to literary archives. The lessons also the essential elements of legislation and organization Italian archives, the concepts of protection and enhancement, the descriptive standards and research tools, traditional and digital: guides, information systems, portals. Finally, a brief word about management dynamics of the institute Archive: services, projects, promotion of scientific activities and cultural economy.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures. There are visits to the city archives in order to ensure a direct approach to the documentary heritage and organizational models that underlie their protection and enhancement.

Assessment methods

The oral examination includes the Assessment on the basis of three questions, two of which related to the reference texts and the third related to the contents of the course. For those not attending, the third question will focus on the additional text.

Teaching tools

Will be used tools and digital technologies, including audiovisual materials, both in the exposition of the issues and explanation of concrete cases.

Guided visits will be made to archives.
