27462 - History of Emilia Romagna in Ancient Times (1)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the Course  the student will know the ancient history  of Emilia-Romagna region by means of a  direct  inspection  of various source kinds (literary, epigraphic, archaeological and documentary). Furthermore he also will posses a research methodology allowing him to inspect various topics concerning the Antquity and its institutions, society as well as culture.

Course contents

The cours is subdivided into five parts:

- an introduction to  discipline history,  general and local history concepts, and to historical research metodology;

-reading of excerpts from  greek and latin authors; analysis of other source kinds aiming to defined a geographical outline of the Augustus' 8th region;

-delineation of historical facts and social and cultural frames characterizing the region before the roman conquest, in particular, those of Bronze and Iron age cultures.

-General outlines of the Augustus' VIII region, starting from the roman conquest of the Po plain.

- roman conquest of the Po river plain; differences between the firste and the second phase of the conquest.

-Various aspects analysis of the romanisation in the Cispadana region (social, economics, religious, institutional etc.) based on different data typologies.

-Methodology exemples about the documentation analysis to attaine a final conclusion of general historical value.

The final lessons will  analyze  the most recent archaeological discoveries concerning the ancient regio octava.

The lessons are going to begin the 1st of february 2016 and they will take place on monday, tuesday and wednesday from 11 am to 1 pm, in the Aula Marco Celio, in via Zamboni 38, V floor.

Teaching methods

Direct lessons in classroom.  Visits to the Emilia Romagna region Museums will be probably organized (Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna, Antiquarium di Marzabotto, Museo Archeologico di Ferrara).

Assessment methods

Assessment methods: The final examination will be oral.
The students will have to show:
-the knowledge of the various source kinds available for reconstructing the an ancient history of a chosen geographical area and their correct use method;
-a good general knowledge of the political and economcal history of the 8th region;
- the knowledge of the main historical frame concerning some latin and roman colonies (in particular, Ariminum, Bononia, Mutina, Parma).
- the knowledge of the data afforded by the recent archaeological discoveries and their contribution to the previous knowledges.

Teaching tools

Hand-outs dealing with the main ancient authors excerpts and maps; ppt concerning the different studied topics.
