73819 - Analytical-Toxicological Approach to Drugs of Abuse

Academic Year 2015/2016

  • Docente: Maria Augusta Raggi
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: CHIM/08
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences (cod. 8518)

Also valid for First cycle degree programme (L) in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences (cod. 8518)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should have knowledge of the chemical structures of the main classes of drugs of abuse, their toxicological properties with particular regard to the class of alkaloids. The student will be able to select suitable test for the identification and quantitation of drugs of abuse .

Course contents

The teaching programme consists of 3CFU of lectures.

The course program will cover analytical techniques and procedures for the processing of  samples for the identification and quantitative analysis of major classes of drugs of abuse: cannabinoids, opioids, cocaine, amphetamines, "club drugs", "smart drugs."

It will also consider the techniques of sampling, transport and storage of samples from the different matrices.

Moreover, the procedures necessary for development and validation of analytical methods for the abuse substances monitoring will be described.

During the lectures the teacher will provide suitable material for exam preparation.

Assessment methods

The student's learning will be verified in progress during lessons with questions about the explained topics. In particular the skills will be assessed in relation to:

-major classes of drugs of abuse (cannabinoids, opiates, amphetamines, alkaloids, smart drugs and club drugs)

-the theoretical basis of instrumental analytical techniques with high sensitivity

-their applications to qualitative and quantitative analysis of drugs of abuse and their metabolites

- knowledge of the chemical structures and toxicity of the examined compounds .

Final assessment will be carried out with 3 questions on the topics discussed during the lessons.
