Learning outcomes
Objectives. Within the disciplinary field of Modern History, this course aims to increase students' knowledge regarding the Mediterranean and its current centrality in the interaction between cultures, focusing on the study of the basic structures which have characterised its history. The Mediterranean is seen as an intersection of lands and water spaces, mountains and rivers, events and continuity, traditions and people, men's actions and reactions to nature and nature's actions and reactions to men. At the end of the course, this study on the Mediterranean will give the student the keys to interpret and understand historical development while being able to grasp the different cultural contents, also with the aim of preserving them.
Course contents

Program
The course aims to analyse the original features of certain coastal communities, paying particular attention to the development of fishing ports and to the history of fishing. Will be taken into consideration also the culture and food traditions. Duration of the course: 60 hours in total.
Topics:
Module 1 (30 hours): environmental framework; ports and docks; population dynamics; settlement structures; navigation and fishing techniques; organisation of fishing ports; aspects of cultural anthropology.
Module 2 (15 hours): The fishermen's society: analysis of the socio-economic evolution of certain Adriatic and Tyrrhenian communities (centuries XVI-XIX).
Module 3 (15 hours): Culture and food traditions .

Teaching methods
The course is 60 hours of classroom lectures distributed into two modules: the first module (30 hours) introduces the concept of Renaissance focusing on the phenomena and the changes characterising this time; the second is an analysis of certain aspects of the Renaissance in Italy and in Europe. In addition, the theme of food culture will be touched upon (choices and provisions, food at the courts, the food of the poor). The course, which will take place during the 1st semester, starting on the 28nd September, 2015 (Corradini Palace, via Mariani) will develop intensively according to the following timetable: Monday, 1-3 p.m.; Tuesday, 1-3 p.m.; Wednesday, 1-3 p.m. (please, check out also the general lesson timetable on the website to verify any possible variations). The study of this subject gives students 12 credits.
Students taking part in the lessons will be also given specific booklets. Teaching language: Italian.
A specific work plan will be arranged for Erasmus students.
Assessment methods
Learning Verification Procedures. The students taking part in the lessons will be given specific booklets by the professor and the readings will be established during the course.
The exam will focus on the notes taken during the lessons, the documentation provided by the professor, the texts analysed during the course and the readings suggested to each student according to personal interests.
The students who are unable to follow the course with continuity can use the booklets, arranging the extra reading of one or more chapters and/or parts of the texts used during the lessons or parts of other texts with their professor.
The course load will be arranged with the students during the course.
For students unable to attend the lessons, the exam program, which is to be arranged with the professor, will consist in the reading of two of the texts – chosen by the student - indicated in the bibliography.
A specific work plan will be arranged for Erasmus students.
Teaching tools
Teaching support tools. During the course, the students will be given specific booklets and in order to facilitate the understanding of some topics, DVDs will also be used along with different images showed using slide shows, overhead projectors and 3D reconstructions.
