Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should recognize the impact of the Judeo-Christian culture on the transformation of the culture and of values system in the late Roman and Hellenistic world in the centuries III to VI A.D. The student should assess the relationships and connections with other disciplines of historical studies identifying the specific contribution of late ancient history. He should be able to identify the opportunities for discussion and learning that are most appropriate to their abilities and inclinations.

The definition of late antiquity and its chronological extension
The late ancient city. Political, religious, economic and cultural aspects

Readings/Bibliography

For a general preparation it is recommended the text of Averil Cameron, Il tardo impero romano, Bologna, Il Mulino 1995.

Assessment methods

The verification of the preparation will take place mainly through a dialogue with the student. Is 'welcome the preparation, on issues and bibliography to be agreed with the teacher, of papers, the discussion of which will start the examination
