Learning outcomes

The main topics relating the design of the structural systems aimed at the stability of buildings are studied: direct and indirect actions, restraints, analytical models, evaluation of the structural safety through probabilistic approaches; design and construction criteria; loading tests; code for structural design. In particular, at the end of the course, the student is able to determine the safety level of different structural systems, with particular reference to those of historical buildings.

Course contents

1) Design issues and security assessment methods.

2) Structural analysis: the equilibrium method. Elements of matrix analysis of structures.

3) The limit state method for the verification of the structural elements.

4) Elements of foundation technique: shallow foundations, deep foundations.

5) Elements of structural dynamics: the dynamics of systems with one degree of freedom, the dynamics of systems with several degrees of freedom.

6) General criteria for the seismic design: performance objectives, definition of the seismic design spectra, structural conception, methods of analysis.

7) Seismic design of reinforced concrete structures: ductility of reinforced concrete elements, capacity design, design criteria and construction details of beams, columns, walls and joints.

8) The existing buildings: structural systems and criteria for the evaluation of the safety level.

9) Innovative methodologies for the antiseismic protection of structures.

The course includes exercises regarding the design and dimensioning of building structures. It is planned to develop numerical and graphical applications.

Teaching methods

The course is characterized by frontal lessons at the blackboard and with power-point slides.

Assessment methods

The examination at the end of the course consists of an oral targeted to assess the achievement of learning objectives, with reference to the calculation of frame structures, the design criteria and the verification of structural elements, the analysis and design of structures in seismic areas.
