Learning outcomes

The course of Greek history offers a basic knowledge of the topics in their historical development. At the end of the class the students will  be able to know the main themes and events (relating to politics, institutions, mentality, religion, economy) with some critical skills. They will know the basic aspects of historical methodology and of the analysis of literary and documentary sources, with particular attention to historiography and epigraphy.

Course contents

1. First  set (6 CFU): Themes and problems of Greek history, from the beginning to the Hellenism.   2. Second set (6CFU): Plutarchean Lives of Demetrius Poliorketes, Eumenes and Pyrrhus.

For the institutional part  (the first 6 CFU) the following texts are recommended:

1) D. Musti, Introduzione alla storia greca, Roma-Bari 2003;

 otherwise, F. Lefèvre, Storia del mondo greco antico, trad. it., Torino 2012.

2) M. Bettalli (a cura di), Introduzione alla storiografia greca, Roma 2001 (second edition).

For the second 6 CFU one must study the following texts:

3) Lives of Demetrius Poliorketes,  Eumenes, Pyrrhus  (ed. BUR/Fondazione Valla/Utet).

4) F. Landucci Gattinoni, Il testamento di Alessandro. La Grecia dall'impero ai regni, Roma-Bari 2014.

5) F. Muccioli, La storia attraverso gli esempi. Protagonisti e interpretazioni del mondo greco in Plutarco, Milano-Udine 2012, cap. IV and Appendice II.

The exam is oral, with questions about the institutional part (with some basic informations about Greek historiography) and the topic discussed in the second set.
