Learning outcomes

At the end of this course and having completed the essential readings and activities  the students should have learnt:

-to understand the evolution of european economies

-to appreciate the different paths of development

-to acquire a critical approach on the current economic facts.The course helps to analyze the economic phenomena with a long term and comparative perspective

Course contents

The economic growth in the preindustrial Europe.From rural domestic industry to industrialisation.Institutions and  Development : a linkage.Money,credit and banking.The Europeans in first globalisation,the foundation of the Joint Stock Companies,the first financial crises.The financial Revolution:from public debts to Central Banks.The Industrial Revolution in England and the different patterns through the continental Europe.Mercantilism,Free Trade,Protectionism.National features:France,Germany,Italy,Russia.The End of Gold Standard,the WWI,the Economic Consequences of the Peace.When Money Dies:Weimar.When Democracy Dies: 1929,The Unemployment.

Golden Fetterns:The Great Crisis,The New Conflict.

The Era of Political Economy:from the minimal State to the Welfare State.The new Cooperation:Bretton Woods, the Marshall Plan, the European Payments Union.Keynes had a dream:the bancor as universal currency.The collectivist economies and the Comecon.The economic integration in Western Europe. Teaching methods

Each lesson will focus on a specific issue,with reference to the previous lessons,seeking the partecipation of  the students.

Assessment methods

For the students who attend the lectures,the exam will be based on a written test after one month from the beginning of the lessons,the discussion of an individual paper and two questions in the oral examination.

For non attending:arrange with the teacher a written research at least two months before the date of exam,achieve a positive vote that will average with that of  the oral examination,based on four questions.

The maps and the statistical data will be shown and explained.
