Learning outcomes
The product design cycle in industrial engineering is described as a process in which the main phases are identified. Functions related to each phase and the information flow are specified through the input and output data for each phase. The main topics are the concept generation and selection methods, the technical requirements and specifications, the system level design and the creation and description of geometric models and functional aspects.
Modern tools and methods in product development are described and physical and virtual prototyping techniques are highlighted. Geometrical modeling of free form surfaces is taught.
Moreover, technological aspects of Reverse Engineering and Rapid prototyping are studied also in relation with their function in the early design phases.
The class is based on the development of a group design project. Thus students have the opportunity to experiment theories under guidelines provided by the professors.
