Learning outcomes
To give basic elements to characterize
· the environment system with special attention to those related to environmental pollution caused by industrial activities;
· to understand environmental impacts and environmental risks from industrial sources.
Course contents
Module 1 (3 CFU)
1. Pollution and environmental protection: basic elements with main focus on process activities
2. Material and energy integral balances to quantify environmental and process systems
3. Preliminary analysis of combustion based energy production systems: environmental and process quantification.
4. Individual activity in the computing lab.
Module 2 (6CFU)
Occupational Safety and Health
Introduction to risk and its measure. Different typologies of risk and risk assessment in the framework of D.Lgs. 81/2008. Hazardous substances and chemical risk, control of the exposusure to chemical substances: elements for the design of dilution and local ventilation systems. A physical risk: exposure to noise.
Environmental impacts
Significant aspects of air, water and soil pollution: pollutants, indicators and indexes. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the developer's EIA report: some methods for identification and assessment (check lists, matrices,….).
The role of simulation modeling to extimate the expected environmental burdens: examples of atmospheric dispersion. Basic elements on the national legislation for the protection of environmental quality of air, water and soil and for the waste management.
Elements on environmental management and eco-audit tools (environmental management systems according to EMAS and ISO 14001)

Teaching methods
Module 1
25 hours of class lessons
Module 2:
50 hours of class lessons, tutorials on case studies.
Modules 1 +2
15 hours of individual work in the dept. computing lab to master spreadsheet use for the solution of assigned problems.
Assessment methods
The final exam covers both the modules. It is based on a preliminary simple test followed by an oral part which is aimed to assess the knowledge of the topics treated in class. Students who did not attend the computing lab activity are also required to solve a more complex problem.
