Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing the students to the knowledge and application of the scientific methodologies for the conservation and treatment of the various materials of the cultural heritage (stones, ceramics, glasses, fabric, paper, etc.). At the end of the course the student will be acquainted with the methodologies employed for conservation interventions, able to evaluate their suitability in the application to the various materials and to communicate with the other professionals involved in the conservation of works of art.

Course contents

- Fundamentals of inorganic chemistry.

- Fundamentals of organic chemistry.

- Characteristics, classification,  micro and macro environmental factors that cause degradation of the following materials: natural stones; ceramics; glasses; metals; ivory and wood; paper, fabric, parchment and leather; pigments and colorants; inorganic and organic binders.

- Products and techniques for restoration, maintenance and conservation of the cultural heritage artefacts.
