Course contents

The course will be divided in two main sections.

In relation to the section of Professor Borraccetti, itwill be dividedin two parts: the first parton the Institutional system; the secondon thesystem of legal protection.

In particular,the contents are about: - European Union; the EU Institutional system; Sources andgeneral principles of EU legal order; Relations between EU legal order and National legal orders; the system of legal protection.

The topics discussed during seminars and conferences to be held during the course will be part of the programme

In relation to the section of Professor Balboni, the first part of the course will be focused on the study of the Treaties' provisions and the directives relevant for the prohibition of non-discrimination, including an analysis of the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The following part will be dedicated to the examination of the Court of Justice's jurisprudence according to the discrimination grounds protected by EU directives:

1. sex;

2. race;

3. age;

4. sexual orientation;

5. disability.

The attention will then be focused on the application of the prohibition of discrimination to the treatment of third-country nationals within the EU. Finally, the course will examine the influence of non-discrimination in other key areas of the EU legislation such as immigration policies.

Teaching methods

Thecourse isbased on frontallectures. The course will be highly interactive and time will be divided to debates following the specific topics dealth with in class.

Assessment methods

Evaluation is basedon twowritten exams (for attenders only) which will take place duringthe course and on an oral exam at the end of the latter (for both sections).
