- Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electrical Engineering (cod. 0933)
Learning outcomes
The Course has the goal of providing a deeper insight into the technical characteristics of the specific devices that are used in the high voltage field. Emphasis is put on the technological and engineering modifications that occur when voltage reaches very high values
Course contents
In summary, the topics that are treated during the course are the following:
- lightning overvoltages and the relevant tools for reducing their effects;
- switching overvoltages and the relevant tools for reducing their effects;
- high voltage circuit breakers;
- high voltage testing facilities for high voltage direct current tests, for high voltage alternate current tests and for high voltage impulse tests;
- insulation coordination;
- high voltage direct current transmission systems: overhead and cable lines, converters, sub-stations;
- fundamentals about the physiological effects, the measurement and the calculation methods of electrical and magnetic fields from high voltage apparatus.
Readings/Bibliography
For a deeper insight, the following textbooks are suggested:
1) F.H. Kreuger, “Industrial High Voltage”, Delft University Press, 1991.
2) Pearmain, Gallagher, “High Voltage Engineering”, IEE Publ., 1982.
Teaching methods
Lectures and practical exercises in the classroom. "In-situ" magnetic field measurements relevant to transmission and distribution power lines.
Assessment methods
Oral examination (two questions chosen by the teacher)
Teaching tools
Lecture notes provided by the teacher both in manuscript version, and in electronic version.
