Learning outcomes

The purpose of this laboratory is to strengthen the students' knowledge, or fill in any gaps, regarding the basic tools used in the semiotics of texts, which will be covered in the advanced course Methodologies of analysis.

Course contents

In the 2011-2012 academic year, the Preparatory laboratory has been designed together with the course taught by the same professor, Methodologies of analysis. The purpose of the laboratory meetings will be to fill in any gaps of basic concepts of textual semiotics and above all to give the students the opportunity to perform concrete analyses on various types of texts, which will be directed and evaluated by the professor; in the laboratory the students together with the professor will create campaign advertisements (commercial and social) on various themes that will be chosen during the course. Note that it is not required to take this laboratory in order to take Methodologies, but it is useful for those who are particularly interested in applied semiotics or for those who do not have a strong background in applied semiotics.

Readings/Bibliography

Given the hands-on practical nature of this laboratory, the professor will introduce key concepts that are useful for analyzing texts, and refer to the primary authors of semiotics in the past thirty years. The fundamental course of the first year Methodologies of analysis will provide a more systematic outline of theoretic instruments.

Teaching methods

The teaching methods are those foreseen for applied semiotics and will include exercises and textual examples.

Assessment methods

The students who attend the laboratory meetings will be tested throughout the duration of the course. Those who choose to take this laboratory but are unable to attend the lessons must be advised that no book will be able to substitute hands-on practice. However, in accordance with the rules of the Faculty, certain readings and certain specific tests, to be decided on with the professor, will substitute the work done in the classroom for those, with good reasons, who are unable to attend either all or most of the laboratory activities.

Teaching tools

Throughout the duration of the course, the professor will provide written and audiovisual materials depending on the texts that are being analyzed.
