Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to develop in the students a basic knowledge for the understanding of the basic concepts of psychosomatic medicine and explore the main clinical and therapeutic guidelines.

Course contents

- Historical evolution of the main psychosomatic topics and their interpretation

- The multidimensional model of illness in psychosomatic. The somatization process: psychological and cognitive mechanisms

- Personality and illness vulnerability: type A behavior, type C personality, alexithymia

- Stress and life events: their clinical measurement

- Physiopathology of stress induced reactions with psychoneuroendocrinology elements

- Methods and instruments in psychosomatic research

- The clinical interview in psychosomatic

- Assessment and measurement instruments in psychosomatic

- Clinical psychosomatic:

  • functional disorders between normality and pathology
  • psychosomatic pathology in DSM-IV and ICD-10
  • the DCPR
  • psychosomatic syndromes: eating, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, urogenital and locomotion disorders
  • psychosomatic dermatology
  • chronic pain
  • burnout
  • mobbing

The final evaluation will consist in a written exam with open ended questions aimed to assess the student's knowledge regarding the topics included in the textbook and discussed in class.
