11375 - Restoration and Preservation of Buildings

Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Moduli: Riccardo Gulli (Modulo 1) Luca Boiardi (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 1); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Long cycle 2nd degree programme in Building and Architectural Engineering (cod. 0067)

Learning outcomes

Course debates the theme of refurbischment of building's heritage, both on the study of historical tecniques and on the explanation of actual regulamentations about the ways of practise.

Course contents

The course will be articulated in to parts referred to the theme of refurbishment of historical heritage and focused on construction techniques, architectural functionality and energetic performances. The didactic comprehends lessons ex-cathedra and exercise activities in groups of students, as indicated above.

1. LESSONS

1a. Seismic restoration of historical masonry building.

The aim of the course is to furnish the bases regarding the theoretical approach and the techniques about restoration and maintenance of historical heritage, with specific regard to the theme of seismic prevention. The course is articulated in two parts. The first regards the exposition of the theoretical assumptions as the foundations of the technique's solutions selected afterwards. The discussion starts from a circumstantial analysis of the criteria on which is based the historical construction, following a knowledge approach which transversally cuts the theory and the practise of pre-modern construction, through the exposition of some specific theoretical passages.

The second part is oriented towards the description of technological methods for building restoration, following an approach based on the use of seismic pre-modern techniques, with specific regards to the case of Marche and Umbria's re-building after the seismic event of 1997 .

 First part: theoretical bases

1-       Historical consciousness and analytical instruments

2-       Structure, masonry frame, construction

3-       The rational consciousness of the effects

4-       Scientific reason and technical knowledge

Second part: practise criteria and applicative techniques in seismic contexts

5-       Regulation and the actual theoretical trend

6-       Constructive and mechanic characteristic of historical masonry buildings

7-       Instrumental diagnostic

8-       Pre-modern techniques of seismic prevention

                - masonry foundations restoration

                - masonry structures restoration

                - hoopings

                - roofs and ceilings restoration

                - wood structures restoration

                - vaults restoration

2a. Refurbishment of recent buildings.

The didactic module is focused on the treatment of the way of restoration and refurbishment of the XX century Italian building heritage. In particular the attention will be centre on the questions joined to actual performances standard about the evaluation of good economic and technique response in the project chooses.

3a. Criteria and means for energetic refurbishment

The didactic module is focused on the treatment of the way of restoration and refurbishment for the optimization of energetic behavior through an appropriate approach in terms of respect of architectural identity of the building and of a good economic and technique solution.

2. EXERCISE

Exercise will be focused on two themes and will be organized on groups of three students each. The aim will be focused on the editing of a technical line-guide about seismic building rehabilitation as fixed by the actual regulations
