Learning outcomes

The Course will introduce to the history of the regions of Eastern and Central Europe and of the Balkans. Subjects  span from the fragmentation of the Habsburg, Ottoman and Russian Empire to the post-Communist "transitions", up to these countries' access into NATO and the European Union. The study will be conducted from the point of view of political and social history, the history of ideas, government and international relations. At the end of the Course, Students will be able to master the main chains of events  which moulded the history of the area and their basic logic.

Course contents

The Course will offer  a review of the main peculiar historic character of Eastern Europe at the end of the XIX century. The contemporary history of the region will be  lookd at through the concepts of economic backwardness, ethnic conflict, aristocratic and peasant societies, Nation-Building. A particular attention will be devoted to the transformation of the Russian Empire into the Soviet Union, before WWII.
