Learning outcomes

The student knows the basic translation tools (grammars, dictionaries, text corpora) and methods (for source text analysis and transfer to the target language) - s/he is able to use them for translating a variety of easy texts from and into  French and Italian - s/he is able to identify and apply basic translation strategies according to the communicative functions of the texts to be translated

Course contents

Into Italian (Danio Maldussi)

The course aims at guiding the students through the comparison of the different linguistic and grammatical structures of both source and target language, with a particular focus on the analysis of logical syntactical connectors.

In order to develop translational competence, the lessons will include propedeutic exercises to translation such as explication de texte, extraction de notions clés, traduction commentée and traduction à vue.

The students will practice translating texts of several different types from French into Italian that will focus mainly on the most important aspects of French actuality taken from  Le Monde, La Croix, Libération, Le Figaro and L'Express.

The teacher will evaluate the students' lexical richness and knowing of the morphosintactical structures of different types of texts.

Into French (Paolo Scampa)

This course provide students with basic translation technics fron italian to
french economics texts and articles. This course will develop the complete
range of linguistics writtens skills taking a particular attention to formal
and semantics contrasts between italian and french.

Teaching methods

Into Italian (Danio Maldussi)

Lessons combine different didactic strategies which include sight translation and individual translations carried out as homework. Research of documentation for translational purposes will also be focused upon.

Assessment methods

Into Italian (Danio Maldussi)
Assessment is by 2 hours written examination. Students will be required to translate one short text (extracts) related to the core module, using monolingual dictionaries only. and French/Italian synonyms and antonyms dictionaries. Assessment and level of difficulty for this exam will depend on available tools.  

Into French (Paolo Scampa)

Assessment is by 2 hours written examination.
