Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will have sufficient knowledge to understand the genetic mechanisms at the basis of trait transmission and the genetic structure of natural and artificial plant populations.
Course contents
DNA and its replication. RNA. Genetic code and protein synthesis. Mendel's experiments. Linkage among genes. Crossing-over and recombination. Linkage maps. Gene interactions (epistasis). Gene regulation (simple examples). Mutations. Quantitative genetics. Phenotypic and genotypic values. Heritability. Population genetics. Hardy Weimberg equilibrium. Natural populations. Genetic constitution of principal crops. Biotechnological application to agriculture (genetic engineering, molecular markers).

lectures.
Teaching methods
The course includes lectures and practical exercises. The practical exercises mainly deal with the analyses of segregation ratios. Visits of experimental farms and seed companies.
Assessment methods
Oral exam. Student's simple seminars on subjects related to the course.
Teaching tools
Laboratories for simple demonstrations. Genetic materials (e.g. maize ears) properly developed for the students will be used during practical investigation. Visits to experimental farms and seed companies.
