Course contents

Elements of Thermodynamics. Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics: The Lorentz gas and the linear transport equation. Boltzmann transport equation. The H-Theorem. The Maxwell distribution. Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics: The perfect gas thermodynamics. The Gibbs canonical measures. The Ising model. The mean field model for the
permanent magnet.  Dynamical systems.  Ergodic and  mixing  systems.  Continued fraction. Entropy of the dynamical systems.  Quantum Mechanics: a Historical introduction. The states  and the Hilbert spaces. The single and the double wells. The elementary theory of scattering. Metastable states. The Hydrogen atom.

Assessment methods

The oral exam deals with  two subjects, one of them chosen by the student.
