Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will acquire basic knowledge of Russian history and Russian literature from the 10th century to mid 19th century. The course will introduce students to the main strategies of analysis of texts of different types and periods.

Course contents

 

NOTA BENE for students registered for the old-style degree course: three asterisks mark the end of the programme of the courses B1/C1 and the beginning of the programme of the courses B2/C2.

 

After a short historical and cultural introduction to the period between 1881 and 1925 *** and the one between 1925 and 1962, the students will be given critical analysis of some works of authors whose literary activity unfolds mainly between the end of XIX century and 1925 ***, and between 1925 and the so called “thaw”.

Teaching methods

During each class texts in Russian and in Italian translation will be read and analysed.

Assessment methods

Oral exam. At the beginning of the exam the student will present the list of the books he intends to discuss. The student will be asked to answer questions concerning the historical and literary background of the considered period (see «Readings for historical and literary background» in the box «Recommended readings»). As for further readings:

- the student registered for the new-style degree course will have chosen six works by six different writers from among the ones treated during the classes and six items of criticism from among the suggested ones (see «Readings for individual study» in the box «Recommended readings»).

- the student registered for the old-style degree course will have chosen for each course two works by two different writers from among the ones treated during the classes and two items of criticism from among the suggested ones (see «Readings for individual study» in the box «Recommended readings»).
