Learning outcomes

Exhaustive knowledge of the architectural works held in Le Corbusier's office in the decade 1940-1950. Full understanding of Jeanneret's projects in Chandigarh and his collaboration with Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew at the time of the construction of the new capital of Indian Punjab.

•   Learning to describe and read critically Jeanneret's architecture in its formal, technical, and contextual components
•   Awaraness of the most significant contributions in the field of historiography related to the following topics: "west"/"east" exchanges; postcolonial development in non Western countries; vernacular modernism
•   Presentation skill

Course contents

Title of the seminar: The architecture of Pierre Jeanneret in Chandigarh. The contribution of a western architect to the modernization of post-colonial India.

Readings/Bibliography

Recent literature on the work of Pierre Jeanneret, and on his collaboration with Le Corbusier.
Scholarly contributions to post-colonial studies.
Literary approaces and novels on Indian culture. Films on post-colonial India.

Teaching methods

Analitical examination of the buildings realized by Pierre Jeanneret in Chandigarh based on archival documentation. Preparation of study models.

Oral presentation in a seminar format.
