Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the students with geographical instruments useful to find out and critically evaluate the global changes related to demography, environment and socio-cultural issues

In the first part of the course the history and the epistemology of geography will be dealt with, from the classical issues to the recent ones, and the methodological instrument with which the discipline works will be largely exposed.

Then the course will go into several human geography “classical” themes: population and territory, landscape and regions, migration, cultural and linguistic diversity on the planet, the human settlement and its evolution, cultural heritage and its protection, focusing on the most recent phenomena.

Course contents

Theoretical and methodological introduction; history of geography, cartography, main geographical themes.

Population: distribution of the human beings on the planet, demographic trends, migrations, instruments of analysis.

The human settlement: rural/urban, urban structure, urban functions, city and region.

Cultural geography: languages and cultures, acculturation phenomena, demographic, cultural and social trends in the light of globalisation.

Environment, poverty and human societies: development and underdevelopment, sustainable development.

Lessons schedule:

• Wednesday 13:45-15:15;

• Thursday 15:30-17:00;

• Friday 12:00-13:30.

Assessment methods

Oral examination to be held at the Section of Geography in the fixed dates. Students may enrol to the exam on the Faculty Web site.

Teaching tools

The lessons will be supported by power points and by the use of frequent geographical and thematic maps.
