Civil Protection Emergency DSS based on CITIzen Journalism to ENhance Safety of Adriatic Basin

Abstract

E-CITIJENS objective is to increase the safety of the Croatian and Italian Adriatic basin natural and man-made disaster by the improvement of monitoring and emergency management measures, harnessing the characteristics of the social media network to significantly enhance Civil Protection’s capacity in reducing disaster risk. It pursues the above target through cross-border cooperation to: supply advanced and efficient decision support system to Civil Protection; keep open a real-time update channel on risk occurrences by collecting and using citizens information voluntarily provided via Social Media (citizen journalism); implement a Raising Awareness intervention on citizens to act as “active sensor” of emergencies via social media.
